Training focused on specialized needs, such as Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) writing, photography, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Remote Sensing course and hands-on flying.

SFOC Writing

You need a Special Flight Operations Certificate to fly at an advertised event, a drone over 25 kg and above 122 metres (400 feet), 122m+ (approximately a 30-storey building). See Canada.ca/drone-safety for more information.

This class is offered for anyone needing to operate outside of the parameters of the Advanced Operations. We will walk you through the SFOC application and assist you with standard operations procedures, checklists, crew training and risk mitigation techniques for your operations.

Techniques in Aerial Photography

Using aerial views for landscape and photography adds a distinguishing flare to your portfolio, but how do you create images that stand out in an industry flooded with beautiful imagery?

Add a new perspective to your photography by taking to the skies to capture striking aerial images and presentations. In this course, you will learn photographic techniques, including how to use a drone to take aerial photographs and panoramas.

This course covers pre-flight best practices, location scouting techniques and shooting strategies for both single-image stills and multi-image panoramas. And demonstrate post-processing techniques for aerial images in Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and Lightroom. With these techniques in your toolkit, you will be able to create beautiful imagery for your projects and shoot dramatic natural vistas from a bird’s eye view.

In this class you will learn:

  • Pre-flight planning best practices
  • Weather conditions
  • Location scouting
  • How to get more comfortable flying your drone and shooting images
  • Digital cameras and what does it all mean
  • File types: Raw vs. Jpeg
  • Shooting strategies for single stills, HDR and panoramas
  • Camera settings to maximize the best results: ISO, shutter, aperture and shutter
  • Bracketing and composition
  • Flying techniques for best imagery
  • Simple maneuvers to practice and improve your skills
  • Seeing what your drone sees
  • Becoming comfortable with your drone capabilities
  • Post-production techniques: Adobe Photoshop, plug-ins and Adobe Lightroom

Requirements: You must hold a Basic or Advanced Operators Certificate from Transport Canada. Must have a suitable drone with camera and laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Cost: $349.00 + HST

Remote Sensing

Are you thinking of expanding your RPAS business to include high accuracy aerial surveys? Do you have connections to mining and agriculture, but are uncertain how to leverage your drone to make use of them?

Diversify your available services by learning the basics of remote sensing and photogrammetry. Create actionable data that your clients can utilize to make informed decisions.

This course gives in introduction to remote sensing. We go over how a camera records imagery and what sensor attributes are important in UAV photography.

Best mission planning procedures for conducting 2D and 3D operations. We also review a few of the prevalent data processing software and the pros and cons associated with each.

In this class you will learn:

  • Basic remote sensing concepts
  • How shutter type and sensor size effect data capture
  • How to plan automated missions for 3D modeling or 2D mapping
  • How to use GPS or control points to get cm accurate data
  • GPS principles so that you always have the highest quality data
  • Advantages and disadvantages of cloud processing
  • How to set ISO, shutter speed and aperture to maximize your data capture
